Tennis Scoring System Explanation

Basic Scoring Hierarchy

Tennis matches are won by winning sets, sets are won by winning games, and games are won by winning points.

Point Scoring Within a Game

  • 0 points = "Love"

  • 1 point = "15"

  • 2 points = "30"

  • 3 points = "40"

  • 4 points = Win the game (must win by 2 points)

Special situations:

  • If both players reach 40-40, it's called "Deuce"

  • From Deuce, a player must win 2 consecutive points to win the game

  • First point after Deuce gives "Advantage" to that player

  • If the player with Advantage wins the next point, they win the game

  • If the opponent wins, it returns to Deuce

Game Scoring Within a Set

  • First player to win 6 games wins the set

  • Must win by at least 2 games (e.g., 6-4 is valid, but 6-5 continues)

  • If the set reaches 6-6, a tiebreak is usually played (first to 7 points, win by 2)

Set Scoring Within a Match

  • Most professional men's matches are best of 5 sets (first to win 3 sets)

  • Women's matches and some men's tournaments are best of 3 sets (first to win 2 sets)

  • Column 4: Current game points - Sinner has 0 points (Love), Alcaraz has 5 games in the set (this appears to be showing set games)
